Handwriting is one of the fastest growing areas of referral to occupational therapy. Many students struggle with handwriting but do not qualify for services within the schools. If you or a teacher have concerns with your child's handwriting just call to make an appointment. The first session involves assessment to determine strengths/weaknesses and then a plan of treatment will be developed along with recommendations for school as appropriate. Therapy time is usually 1 hr with the last 5-10 min to complete payment and provide any home program instructions.
Techniques used in therapy are fun and involve games, movement activities, and exercises designed to target issues causing each individual child problems with handwriting. Often when a child struggles with their handwriting, it prevents them from being able to learn new academic concepts causing them to fall further behind each day. They tend to push back on writing tasks and often feel negatively regarding their handwriting.
The Handwriting without Tears method is an easy and fun way to learn using multi-sensory hands on techniques with positive feedback and using empowering techniques. The goal is to get the kids having so much fun that they forget that they are learning and want to come back for more.
